A few words from Jordan

“It’s scary but I’m not alone

Life is NUTS right now. Our country is upside down. There’s division, hate, animosity and a new problem every day. Tensions are high. The economy is out of whack and eggs are SO EXPENSIVE.

Why are eggs ever that expensive?

But, here’s what I know and cling to…

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world
-
John 16:33

I heard a preacher one time say “be nice to people because every single person you meet is either in a storm, just came out of a storm, or they are headed into a storm.”

And, honestly, that’s one of the truest things I’ve ever heard. We all have our “stuff.” We all have situations in our lives that cause us to wonder where God is and long for our future with Him when all is made right. Today, as I write this, I have so many questions about my own life; so many fears that I have to daily reconcile with God.

But, He’s never left me or forsaken me. He’s always made a way. And as I regularly tell my wife (and myself), “has there ever been a day that we haven’t had what we needed?”

Walking with Jesus doesn’t automatically remove scary situations from our lives. We still have to experience scary things, but not alone. Jesus leads us with His peace and joy and gives us His perspective.

So wherever this blog post finds you, HOLD on to Him. He is with you. He is for you. He has good things in store for those who love Him.

It may be scary… but you’re not alone.

scary lyrics

Verse 1
Lately, I felt like I was a little bit
Crazy just trying to figure it out
But I’m waiting 'cause
I’ve run out of solutions
And I’m learning what the truth is

Pre Chorus 1
It’s the promise that
Whatever comes
Whatever storms
Though this road leads
To the great unknown

Chorus
I’m not alone!
I’m flying with angels!
It might seem dangerous
But I'm not afraid of this
I’m holding on!
You taught me to dance here
Let you be the answer
When I’m at my weakest
I know you are strong
It’s scary, but I’m not alone!

Verse 2
You saved me
Now we both have a history
So maybe I could
Trust a little bit more

Pre Chorus 2
You’re everything
That I have ever needed
You’re my bread and my protection
No matter what

Bridge

Oo-oo, let’s go traveling
Canyons and valleys!
Oo-oo, as long as you are keeping me
Through, through this life until the great finale!
You’ll prove if I just trust you and believe!

Tag
When I’m weary and the road is long
When everything is going wrong
It’s scary, but I’m not alone!

“Lack” by Jordan Merritt

lack From part II

the story behind “lack”

Have you ever felt like you don’t have the things that you need to accomplish the goal that you want to achieve? Have you ever looked at the mountain in front of you and wondered how on earth you are going to climb it? That’s what LACK is about.

I was in a writers retreat and was tasked, along with Buck Mcknight, to write a song about creativity, not poverty. But, the two go hand in hand. It may have just been instinct at the moment, but it was so deeply embedded in my DNA that when “creativity” was mentioned as the target, my brain went immediately to not having what I needed.

We wrote this song from the standpoint of a little boy named, you guessed it, “Lack.”

We started with, “What if the little boy’s name is Lack and he doesn’t have the tools to do something?” The rest honestly just wrote itself!

It was such a fun song to write and such a fun moment to share it that I honestly didn’t really dig much deeper into what this song meant to me until months later.

The first line of the song goes as follows:

“Lack went out to build a rocket ship just like he’d seen, but all he had was bottle caps and cans and hopes and dreams.”

I was listening to this song one day, just analyzing the production of it, and it hit me:

I am LACK.

People and songs Christian artist Jordan Merritt holding guitar in hilly landscape at sunset

I’ve said for years, “lack of resources is the birth place for creativity”. I honestly don’t know how this statement, this song, and the reality that I’ve created from for years didn’t connect in my brain, but in this moment when it all came together, I just cried.

Now, I know I’m not the only person who has experienced this feeling. There are many people who are much more creative than me. They are day in and day out coming up with new ways to accomplish new goals with new problems in their way.

So this song isn’t “MY” song… it’s OURS.

It’s a song to the dreamers: the ones who dare to believe that there’s more “out there” than what they currently see.

It’s a song to the believers: the ones who wake up every day and put one foot in front of the other.

It’s a song to the builders: the ones who put their hands to work, no matter what those around them say as the do it.

It’s a song to the creators: the ones who get ridiculed and mocked for not “fitting in,” all the while making something out of nothing for ALL to enjoy.

It’s a song to the finishers: the ones who can’t sleep until they’ve seen with their own eyes what they’ve seen in their dreams for so long.

Finally, this song is for you. It’s for your children and their children.

Here’s my prayer for you:

“May God would continue to give you the dreams, vision, courage, boldness, craziness, and perseverance to be like Him and CREATE.

The world is waiting for your God-given idea to come through your God-given ability.

You probably won’t have what you need… but neither did Lack.”

Lack Lyrics by jordan merritt

Verse 1
Lack went out to build
A rocket ship just like he’d seen
But all he had was bottle caps and
Cans and hopes and dreams
He had a big idea
And it could've stopped here
Those dreams lift off like NASA
Rockets blasting to the sky
But Houston we’ve got problems 'cause
Lack opened up his eyes
He didn't have the tools
But no, Lack's not a fool

Chorus
What he don't have
Won’t hold him back
Though it might be what he needs
'Cause he does have
Astronomical creativity
And the more he dreams
The more he sees
He’s not yet qualified
But what I know about
Lack is that he’ll get there
You just gotta give him time

Verse 2
Lack packed up his bags and
Took his dreams to Californ
He studied astrophysics
And how galaxies are formed
You might say that he’d arrived
But he wasn't satisfied
'Cause he had
Armstrong dreams of playing
Putt-putt on the moon
But his bachelor pad
Was launching bad
And his rent was overdue
He longed for all the thrills
But he could barely pay his bills

Chorus
What he don't have
Won’t hold him back
Though it might be what he needs
'Cause he does have
Astronomical creativity
And the more he dreams
The more he sees
He’s not yet qualified
But what I know about
Lack is that he’ll get there
You just gotta give him time
You just gotta give him time!

Verse 3

Lack looks out the window
As he’s racing past the sun
But his heart is grounded wondering
How he’ll raise the other one
After all that he had earned
He still had much to learn
But the limit of his name
Was the reason he was sure

Chorus
What he don't have
Won’t hold him back
Though it might be what he needs
'Cause he does have
Astronomical creativity
And the more he dreams
The more he sees
He’s not yet qualified
But what I know about
Lack is that he’ll get there
Oh, what I know about
Lack is that he’ll get there
You just gotta give him time
You just gotta give him time
Oo-oo-oo-oo

Character Development
Family Devotion

In Jordan Merritt’s song "Lack," we meet a character named Lack who starts with little more than bottle caps and big dreams. Through his story, we learn that not having everything can actually spark our creativity and drive us to achieve great things. This tale is a wonderful reminder that with a bit of imagination and persistence, we can reach for the stars.

1. Dreams Start with What You Don't Have

"Lack went out to build a rocket ship just like he’d seen, but all he had was bottle caps and cans and hopes and dreams." Imagine starting with just a few simple things and dreaming about rocket ships. Lack shows us that great adventures begin with using what you have creatively.

2. Creativity Comes Alive When You Need It Most

"What he don't have won’t hold him back, 'cause he does have astronomical creativity." Even though Lack didn’t have much, his imagination was limitless. Like when you play make-believe, Lack teaches us that creativity can fill in the gaps when we’re missing something.

3. Learning Is Part of the Adventure

"Lack packed up his bags and took his dreams to Californ. He studied astrophysics and how galaxies are formed." Lack’s journey into learning about the stars shows that following your dreams often means learning new and exciting things.

4. Being Content Is a Journey, Not a Destination

"You might say that he’d arrived, but he wasn't satisfied." Lack teaches us that reaching our goals is just part of the journey. True joy comes from continuing to pursue our passions and dreams, always curious about what’s next.

5. Every Challenge Is a New Lesson

"He longed for all the thrills, but he could barely pay his bills." Like Lack, sometimes we face tough times, but each challenge is an opportunity to learn something new about perseverance and managing what we have.

6. Balancing Dreams and Real Life

"Lack looks out the window as he’s racing past the sun, but his heart is grounded wondering how he’ll raise the other one." This shows us that even as we reach for our dreams, we need to stay grounded and take care of the basics at home and in life.

7. Patience and Persistence Pay Off

"But what I know about Lack is that he’ll get there, you just gotta give him time." Lack’s story is a beautiful reminder that all great things take time and persistence. Just like waiting for a plant to grow, our dreams take time to bloom.

Conclusion From bottle caps to dreams of galaxies, Lack's journey inspires us to think creatively and work hard toward our goals. His story encourages everyone, young and old, to dream big and never let the lack of something stop you from achieving greatness. Let’s remember, every limitation we face could be the beginning of an incredible adventure.

"Rubble and Wreckage"

Listen Cliff Preston’s debut album, “Rubble & Wreckage.”

rubble and wreckage
now streaming everywhere

a few words
from
cliff preston

This album is a project that I thought might never be made. I believed that the Lord was done using me in this way. But God, being rich in mercy, allowed me to meet some fantastic people and resurrected this thing that I had let die. These songs are stories of happiness, hard times, struggles, sorrow, and His faithfulness to get glory in all seasons.

God, may you speak to the hearts of those who listen and comfort those who need your help right now. Whatever the circumstance or question, help us to know the answer begins and ends with Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Help us to remember that we can trust You because You have never broken a promise. To the ones who believe that You are done using them, let these songs be the journey that You choose to lead them to Your paths of resurrected purpose. We trust You, and in the precious name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.

It’s been said that what sets Cliff Preston apart is his raw authenticity and compassion.  Preston’s music ministry began in 2002 as he began traveling with bands to bring awareness to the love of Jesus as well as the mental health crisis.  With his father being a professional counselor and pastor, he was very aware of the effect that mental health was having on the generation, as well as the ultimate source of wellness - the finished work of the cross.  He has spent the following twenty years traveling the country writing songs, leading worship, preaching, and even opening businesses geared towards Christ-centered clinical mental healthcare.

Cliff is proud to call Smackover, Arkansas his hometown.  He is even prouder of God’s faithfulness through his marriage with his wife Leslie, and the wisdom God provides as they raise their daughter Kannyn (12), and their two sons Murphy (10) and Campbell (2).

a few words from
cliff preston

I remember being in an old barn in the desert of California. It was in 2007, and the band I was with was shooting a music video. We didn't know the crew well; they had led us into the desert and this old barn. They are dear friends now, but it was a little unsettling, to say the least. I remember giving my dad my last will and testament as we rode to the site.

We approached this barn, and I didn't know why we would shoot a video here. I saw the sun shoot through the cracks in the hundred-year-old barn at that moment. The sun and dust created a light show that it would be hard to recreate with LED’s and haze.

The cracks were how the light got in. Over the years of wear and tear, the old barn became a beautiful place to behold. The scars of the storms and abuse had created just the environment for a beautiful rebrand. That's how it is in our lives.

God will get the glory out of the darkest things if we allow Him to. He takes those scars and cracks, infuses them with His light, and uses our testimonies of redemption to help the next one battling through the same storm. And that is how He rebuilds us. He's still rebuilding me.

Rebuilder lyrics

Verse 1
Through the rubble
And the wreckage
I'd forgotten who I was
You reached out for my hand
And found me in the dust
My soul had given up
But You wouldn't
Leave me undone

Chorus
Rebuilder
My walls were crumbling
Restorer
You brought
The light into the room
And filled my lungs
So I could learn to breathe again
My shelter
My warmth
In the coldest night
My helper
You held me up 'til I could stand
On the promise that
You are rebuilding me
(Oh You promise that Y
ou are rebuilding me)

Verse 2
I have seen the dawn
Start to break
Between the cracks
The beginnings of a day
I never thought
Would come to pass
You brought me back to life
You were the morning in my night

Bridge
To the man I am today
With all my fear and shame
You rescued my heart
And showed me that joy
Can come through pain
You brought dancing to these streets
My second chance for peace

"Greater Still"

Read the Story and Listen to the song, “Greater Still” Presenting Cliff Preston.

a few words from cliff preston

There is a common theme in my life. I've been given so much grace. I used to sing the hymn “Grace Greater Than All My Sin.” I sang this song long before I knew what it meant or how much I would need its truth. I remember sitting in the darkest time of my life. I believed that my life was over. I believed that my family was over. I believed my ministry was over.

Oh, but that dreadful, beautiful cross.

Jesus' sacrifice is so great that it is undefeated and will remain so. His victory is more significant than all of the things we have done and could do. So, today, whatever you’re facing, and thinking is insurmountable…His blood is Greater Still!

Greater still lyrics

Verse 1
For great the fall
That broke perfection
And great the stain
Passed down through time
The sickness strong
The sorrow long
No peace to find

Verse 2
For great the void
That separated
And great the
Heart of flesh and lies
But greater still
The faithful will
Of Jesus Christ!

Chorus 1
Oh Lord, our Lord
How awesome
Is Your name
In all the earth!
Forever we proclaim
"Greater still
The power of our God!"

Verse 3
For great the
Cost of our salvation
And great the debt
That must be paid
But greater still the blood
That spilled
And Love displayed!

Chorus 2
Oh Lord, our Lord
How awesome is Your name
In all the earth!
Forever we proclaim
"Greater still
The power of our God!"

Verse 4
For great the tomb
That held our Savior
And great the stone
That sealed the door
But a guilty grave
Cannot contain
Our Christ, the Lord! Oh!

Chorus 3
Oh Lord, our Lord
How awesome is Your name
In all the earth!
Forever we proclaim
"Greater still
The power of our God!"

Tag 1
Oh, Jesus Christ, the
One who conquers all!
The Lamb of God
Has torn down every wall!
Greater still
The power of our God!

"Who the Cross is For"

Read the Story and Listen to the song, “Who the Cross is For.” Presenting Cliff Preston.

a few words from cliff preston

There was a lady who walked the aisle of a church. As she approached the pastor, she fought through tears to say, “I just don't think I can be saved.” This woman began to list the reasons that she believed what she did. After she had finished speaking, the pastor looked her right in the eyes and said, “Well, ma'am, you're exactly who the cross is for.”

I don't know if I had ever heard that phrase before, but I knew it would impact many lives the moment I heard it. We are constantly bombarded with the lie that we've done so many bad things there is no possible way that God could love us or save us. Child, nothing you can do disqualifies you from coming to the cross. If you're struggling today and the thoughts of your past and mistakes have paralyzed you from walking forward...come as you are because you're who the cross is for.

Lyric Video

who the cross is for lyrics

Verse 1
She thinks she
Can't be saved
Disqualified by choices
That were made
Seems destined
For an early grave
Oh, not today

Verse 2
He's searching for
The next way out
'Cause the life he's built
Is burning to the ground
And the well is dry
And all he sees is drought
But God You reign now
So Father rain down

Chorus 1
You're who the cross is for
'Cause when God sees you
He sees Jesus' scars, not yours
And every broken place
Is a grace-filled open door
Come as you are
You're who the cross is for

Verse 3
So if you feel alone tonight
Reminded of your sin
For the millionth time
Just remember
They disappeared
The day He died
And when you breathe new life
You have new life!

Chorus 2
Oh, you're who the cross is for
'Cause when God sees you
He sees Jesus' scars, not yours
And every broken place
Is a grace-filled open door
Come as you are
You're who the cross is for

Bridge 1
If you ever felt abandoned
So weak you cannot stand up
Just take His hand and know
You're who the cross is for!
Because He was forsaken
Your life will not be taken!
It's time we awaken and know

Chorus 3
We're who the cross is for
'Cause when God sees you
He sees Jesus' scars, not yours
And every broken place
Is a grace-filled open door
Come as you are
You're who the cross is for

"Coming Day of Plenty" (By and By)

Read the Story and Listen to the song, “Coming Day of Plenty” Presenting Cliff Preston.

a few words from cliff preston

We will understand it better by and by. This has always been one of my favorite songs. When asked to write some verses for this classic, I jumped at the chance. As more and more of my family members cross over into Glory, it's easier for me to understand the longing for the coming day of plenty. Even though the longing here is intense, we must not neglect our mission here to make disciples. We might all be dying to get there, but we have to wait our turn. While we wait, we speak about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus so more and more can go with us. Amen.

coming day of plenty lyrics

Verse 1
There's a coming day of plenty
Where the Sabbath will not end
Where soldiers finally get to rest
And leave this world of sin
Appetites will all be satisfied
And flames ain't going to burn
We're all dying to get there
But we gotta wait our turn

Chorus 1
By and by, Lord
When the morning comes
When the saints of God
Are gathered home
We will tell the story
Of how we've overcome
We will understand it
Better by and by
We will understand it
Better by and by!

Verse 2

We don't know yet
What we shall be
Or what we shall become
In the twinkling of an eye
We'll be staring in the Son!
All these trials and tribulations
In no ways will compare
To the glory that we're gonna see
When we all get there!

Chorus 2
By and by, Lord
When the morning comes
When the saints of God
Are gathered home
We will tell the story
Of how we've overcome
We will understand it
Better by and by
We will understand it
Better by and by!

Bridge
The Son will shine forever
Past the dark side of this moon!
The Son will shine forever
Past the dark side of this moon!
Oh, people be getting ready
We're going soon and very soon!
People be getting ready
We're going soon and very soon!

Chorus 3
By and by, Lord
When the morning comes
When the saints of God
Are gathered home
We will tell the story
Of how we've overcome
We will understand it
Better by and by
We will understand it
Better by and by!

Tag
We will understand it

We will understand it
Better by and by. Oh!

“I try to see people through the lens of what God has brought me through and saved me from. I believe that if God can love and use even me, he can love and use anyone.”

Cliff brings over two decades of ministry experience and business development to his partnership with People & Songs. In that time, he has written songs for artists including Newsong, JJ Weeks, Carrolton and more. He has shared the stage with artists such as MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, and Natalie Grant among others.  All while opening and building companies that develop platforms to display Christ to a lost and hurting world.

Cliff is excited for what is to come as he joins forces with this diverse team of artists, worship leaders, and writers for the glory of God.

"Miss You Like Crazy" by Cliff Preston

Read the Story and Listen to the song, “Miss You Like Crazy” Presenting Cliff Preston.

a few words from cliff preston

John 11:35, “Jesus wept.” The first time I realized Jesus wept, knowing He would raise Lazarus from the dead, was an important day for me. I learned on that day that we didn't serve a God who didn't understand what it was like to lose a friend. I also understood that Jesus showed us that it was okay to grieve.

Then the Holy Spirit, through Paul, tells us how not to grieve…like those with no hope. Loss is hard. I think about my dad often. I wrestle with the reality that I might forget how his voice sounded. I wrestle with the thought that my kids are growing up and will need me less and less.

Miss You Like Crazy is our best attempt to give you a song to process those hard earthly disappointments. We may indeed weep as we continue to wrestle with these things in this fallen world, but we do not grieve like those without hope. He is the answer for these ails, too. I love all of you.

miss you like crazy lyrics

Verse 1
When I look at you
There's something 'bout the way
Your eyes hold our history
And though I'm thankful too
Is it wrong to say
That this happened
Way too fast for me
How can someone take it in
Life's busy then it's quiet again
Do you prepare or just let go
Because I know I know

Chorus
I'm gonna miss you like crazy
I feel the temperature changing
This went at the speed of light
And I know that we can't stop time
Will the memories
Break my heart or save me
I'm gonna miss you
I'm gonna miss you like crazy

Verse 2

Like the sun and moon
Just too far away
What if I forget your ways
If I could I'd choose
To go relive a day
And try to memorize your face
Must I just pretend again
Or learn a whole new way to live
As the times they ebb and flow
Oh I know I know

Bridge
I won't hold you back
I'll see you down the path
I'll hold on to the joy
I'll smile at what we had
With every photograph
The grateful kind of sad
If it weren't for all the good
It wouldn't hurt this bad
I just know I know

Tag 2
Every time Oh
I'm gonna miss you
I'm gonna miss you like crazy

"Who Needs The World"

Read the story and listen to the song, “Who Needs the World.” Presenting Cliff Preston.

WHO NEEDS THE WORLD” LYRICS

Verse 1
I won’t be caught dead hauling
Treasures that were never mine
I got my eyes set on heaven
I’m banking on a better prize
Don’t want to look back
And find It was
All just a waste of time
I won’t be caught dead
I won’t be caught dead

Chorus 1
Who needs the world?
I got Jesus!
Who needs the world?
I got Jesus!
I don’t need money,
Fame, cars, or clothes
'Cause I got the Father,
Son, and Holy Ghost!
Who needs the world?
I got Jesus!
Oh, I got Jesus!
(Oh, oh, oh, oh!)

Verse 2
I meant what I said.
I found it, something
So clearly divine
Went down to the river
Tasted something much
Sweeter than wine
When the Word
Splits the eastern sky
I'll come running
Leave this life of mine
I meant what I said
I won’t be caught dead.

Bridge
From the eastern shore to Californ
And anywhere in between
He’s better than anything
You’ve ever dreamed!

Miss You Like Crazy

Read the Story and Listen to the song, “Miss You Like Crazy.” Presenting Jade Lundgren.

the story by
jade lundgren

It was a typical Friday night in our house. Dane was working a late shift, and Pearl and Anna had plans with friends. Lucia and I settled in to watch a movie together, a tradition we've cherished over the years. Lucia is now a junior in high school. We both love staying in, getting cozy in our jammies, preparing a tray of snacks, and watching some type of heartfelt show together. It's simple, but it brings us immense joy.

The following morning, while the house was still asleep, I opened my journal to jot down my thoughts, something I attempt to do every day. My journal is one place where I connect with God and reflect on my life. I found myself thinking about the previous night spent with Lucia, and it dawned on me how different things would be when she goes off to college. The realization hit me anew that morning.

My other daughters thrive outside the home, immersed in activities, and aren't as keen on quiet Friday nights with me. That's okay—it's just not their style. They take after my husband Dane, who enjoys being out and about. Lucia and I just naturally move at the same pace in life and end up buddying up a lot. It’s always been like that.

As I wrote in my journal, tears welled up in my eyes. "I'm going to miss her like crazy," I wrote. "I feel the temperature changing." I often express my emotions through poetry, and my inner musician automatically turns my words into melodies. That morning, I sat at the piano and crafted a verse and chorus. Over the next few days, I refined it, pouring my heart into every word. When I shared the song with Lucia, we both ended up in tears.

We sense the impending change. Lucia is graduating from high school and will be leaving our home for the first time. It's a wonderful change in every sense, but it's bittersweet. Like many things in life, grief mingles with joy during transitions. I will deeply miss her presence in our home—the sound of her voice, her lively descriptions of her day, the way she hurriedly walks in the morning preparing for school, the aroma of her weekend baking. I'll miss hugging her daily, cuddling with her at night, and sharing those simple, cherished moments together. Her everyday presence will be greatly missed; just reflecting on it brings tears to my eyes.

I recently heard someone mention "the gospel of positivity" infiltrating Christianity, where people emphasize speaking only positive things. I question how this perspective aligns with Jesus, who experienced deep emotions, wept, and endured the cross, understanding and collecting our tears. For me, fully feeling and processing emotions is vital. There's a lot of sadness in this world, and it's okay to acknowledge and write about it. God welcomes our raw emotions. He draws close to the brokenhearted, inviting us to process everything with Him. He's kind and meets us in every situation, guiding us through life's challenges.

I want to highlight a particular lyric that holds deep meaning for me: "Life's busy then it's quiet again." Different life seasons often catch me off guard when they turn quiet. When I became a stay-at-home mom, life was loud with a crying baby but quiet in profound ways. I had fewer adult interactions, missing the camaraderie of coworkers.

Moving across the country also brought a quiet phase, with fewer friends and social activities. I've struggled during these transitions, always seeking connection and my place in the world. Busyness can sometimes mask deeper issues, making everything seem okay.

But the reality is that many things in this world are not okay, and that's where the gospel begins. It acknowledges the brokenness—the loss of loved ones, untimely deaths, and the sorrow that permeates every joy. The good news addresses the bad news, promising that one day, everything will be made right. There will be no more goodbyes in heaven, which is one of my favorite things about it.

My friend Cliff Preston, a fellow musician from The Band Table, helped me finish this song. Cliff, who lost his father, brought authenticity to the lyrics, articulating the pain of missing someone dearly. We wanted this song to resonate with anyone experiencing loss.

As we journey toward Heaven, where tears and sorrow will vanish, songs like "Miss You Like Crazy" help us process earthly challenges. They remind us that it's okay to pause, feel our emotions, and know that we're not alone in missing someone or something.

"Bless My Soul"

Listen to “Bless My Soul,” the title track from Phil King’s album.

The Story and the Study

I enjoy four-wheeling off the beaten path in my old Jeep Wrangler, and the dirtier it gets, the better. However, getting stuck in the mud unexpectedly can be a hassle. Once, while showing off my Jeep's capabilities to a friend, I veered off the highway in south Texas and engaged four-wheel drive. I pointed to a swamp by the road and confidently said, "Watch this." Thirty minutes later, we were still stuck in the swamp in south Texas on a very rainy evening.

The relief when the tow truck arrived was unforgettable. The flashing yellow lights were a welcome sight! A rugged man with a mustache expertly handled his wrench and tossed me a steel cable. His end was attached to his larger vehicle parked safely on the main road. I quickly hooked the cable onto the front of my Jeep.

From my perspective, the situation seemed impossible, but the mustached man and his rescue truck made it look easy. Just like the song "Bless My Soul," the tow truck effortlessly pulled me out of the muck. The joy I felt when my tires touched the pavement again was incredible.

This scenario mirrors what Jesus does for us. What seems impossible to us is simple for Him. Our biggest challenges are easy for Him to handle. Once we're free, just like the song "Bless My Soul," we can't help but share our experience with others. I recall telling my friends and family after the incident, "Geico insurance is amazing— you have to try it! That little green gecko on TV isn't kidding!"

This is why those who have been redeemed and set free can't help but share their faith in Jesus. So if you ever feel like praising what God has done, go ahead and let the world hear it!

bless my soul lyrics

Verse 1
I will say, I’ll testify
How the Lord done saved my life
How He brought me
From the muck and mire
And led me straight
Out through the fire

Verse 2
Freedom came
In the midnight hour
The Holy Ghost filled me with power
So now freedom is my song
No turning back, that devil lost

Chorus
Jesus loved me so much
That He turned me around
He loved me so much
That He saved me
Bless my soul

Verse 3
Now that I walk in liberty
There’s gonna be addicts getting free
I’m dangerous, not playing around
Everywhere I go is holy ground

Chorus 2
Jesus loved me so much
That He turned me around
He loved me so much
That He saved me
Bless my soul

Verse 4
Now that I walk in liberty
There’s gonna be addicts getting free
I’m dangerous, not playing around
Everywhere I go is holy ground

Chorus 3 (x2)
Jesus loved me so much
That He turned me around
He loved me so much
That He saved me
Bless my soul

The story and the
study from Phil King

As a child, I disliked going to church and hated dressing up. I would think, “Why do I need to wear these uncomfortable clothes and a tie when I’m only 6 years old?” Ironically, my brief escape from dressing up during my 20s ended when I married a successful model who cares about my attire. (I love you, Kalyn!)

Back to my childhood—every Sunday, I would dress up at my mother’s insistence, attending church 52 times a year. I was not glad when they said, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

In Psalm 122, David expressed his joy at worshiping in God’s house. My disdain for church vanished years later when I truly met and surrendered my life to God. At 11, I had my first real encounter with God, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and completely transformed.

After that, the Bible made sense, and I would walk through fields hearing God speak to my mind and heart, revealing deep truths about Himself. I could sense His presence whenever it manifested during worship or conversation.

From that day on, I couldn’t wait to go to church every Sunday. The feeling never faded. Now I understand how David felt when he wrote, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go to the house of the Living God.”

i was glad lyrics

Verse 1
I once was so lost and uncertain
A slave to the pow’r of this world
Then Jesus broke off
Every shackle and chain
Now I’m bound for
The House of the Lord!

Chorus
I was glad when they said unto me
I was glad when they said unto me
"Let us go to the house of the Living God!"
"Let us go to the house of the King!"

Verse 2
When I remember those dark days
What thankfulness flows from my soul!
That Jesus would come and deliver this heart
To dwell in His Heavenly courts!

Chorus 2
I was glad when they said unto me
I was glad when they said unto me
"Let us go to the house of the Living God!"
"Let us go to the house of the King!"

Bridge (x6)
There’s freedom
In the House
Joy in the House
Healing in the
House of the Lord!

Tag (spoken word)
"Aight Pastor, you got a word for us?"
"David said, I'd rather be a doorkeeper
In the house of the Lord than
To live in the house of kings
I don't know 'bout you but I would rather be
A keeper of his presence than to live
In the finest house this world has to offer
'Cause there's nothin' like His house
Because there's joy for your soul
In the house of the Lord
There's freedom for everything
That's holdin' ya back right now
In the house of the Lord
And if your body is racked with pain
There's healin'! There's freedom!"

Bridge 2 (x4)
There’s freedom in the House
Joy in the House
Healing in the House of the Lord!

The Story and the Study
from phil king

Most people grow up with Christmas traditions. For my family, one of the most cherished was sitting in a large circle while Mamaw read “The Night Before Christmas.” The fun part was that every time she said the word “and,” we would pass our gift to the next person. It was a lively scene as everyone shook their boxes, wondering what they would end up with. The lively bartering and trading that followed Mamaw's reading always added to the excitement.

As a child, that circle was a constant source of connection and comfort, bringing our family together every year. No matter how hectic the year had been, these moments helped us recenter and reconnect. But, as with all things on Earth, good traditions don’t last forever. Mamaw and Papaw have passed away, and our families have grown and scattered. Now, the tradition lives on as a treasured memory.

However, we have an unchanging anchor in Jesus. No death, change, fading, or aging can shake this foundation. I've chosen to build my life on Jesus, who remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. One million years from now, I will still have Jesus and His unfailing love and kindness.

Why not build your life around what truly endures instead of the fleeting things of this world? Do not store up treasures on Earth where moths destroy and thieves steal; store up your treasures in Heaven.” Seeing life through this lens makes Jesus's words even more profound. He calls us to focus on what truly matters—where He is and where all who believe in Him will be forever. In His presence, nothing ever changes.

nothing’s changed lyrics

Verse 1
Sight for our eyes
In the dark of night
Drink for our thirst
When the days are dry
Strength for our souls
On the weary road
Our only source
Our only hope

Chorus
You're still who
You say You are
Forever unfailing God
Your pow'r has no end
Your word always stands
Nothing's changed

Verse 2
Laughter in life
In uncertain times
Joy in our song
Though the waters rise
There's no need to fear
There's no need to run
Your mercies are new
Like the morning sun

Bridge
Yesterday, today, tomorrow, Jesus
You're the One I'll follow
You have always been
And You will always be
Yesterday, today, tomorrow, Jesus
You're the One I'll follow
You are still the same
Nothing's changed

"Forgive Us" by Phil King

“Forgive Us (Our Confession)” by Phil King and Chris Burns.

The story and the study
from Phil King

During my sophomore year of high school, I took an engineering class that quickly became my favorite. We were fortunate to have access to this class in public school—it was a blast working with robotic arms, programming devices, and lasers. My enthusiasm for the subject made me sound like a true nerd, but I embraced it. However, one classmate stood out for his intense dislike of Jesus and, consequently, his distaste for me as a Christian.

One day, his harassment became overwhelming, and I found myself arguing back, lacking the "gentleness and respect" that 1 Peter 3:15
calls for. I may have won the argument, but I lost sight of the opportunity to share God's love with him.

Upon returning home, the Holy Spirit prompted me to reflect on my behavior. I realized how far I had strayed from God's love and humility in my response. Rather than feeling shame, God guided me to apologize and make things right with my classmate.

That evening, I wrote him a letter of apology, acknowledging that my response hadn't reflected God's love. I even included a Ghirardelli caramel square as a peace offering. The next day, I watched him read the letter in class, his expression revealing a sense of surprise and appreciation.

From that moment, our relationship shifted. He was kinder to me, and we never argued again. Although we eventually lost touch, I believe that moment of reconciliation had a lasting impact on both of us.

As Christians, we often face opposition from those who believe they're acting justly. Yet, we must remain true to Christ's nature, showing love even when it's not returned. The song "Forgive Us" transitions into "You Are So Beautiful," echoing our need to seek forgiveness and extend grace to others.

While we may never be perfect, God's power and grace enable us to strive to be bridge builders and lovers of those who don't reciprocate our affection. We do this because He first loved us.

forgive us (our confession) lyrics

Verse 1
We’ve loved when it’s been easy
We’ve lived the way we want
We've claimed to represent
The Kingdom of the Lord
We've offered good intentions
We’ve slept when called to prayer
And when it really mattered
We simply were not there

Pre Chorus

Much has been expected
'Cause there's so much
We've received

Chorus
Forgive us
Forgive us
We confess
We have not lived
Like Jesus
Forgive us

Verse 2
His Word is all around us
Yet we're starved for daily bread
We've delegated worship
And Sung our songs instead

Bridge
He’s everything we’d hope to be
He’s faithful, good, and kind
He’s slow to anger, rich in love
He’s the wisdom of the Wise
He's Father to the Fatherless
The Light that ever shines
The home for every prodigal
The reason we’re alive

"He's Way Ahead of You" by Phil King

“He’s Way Ahead of You” by Phil King.

The Story and the
Study from Phil King

I love gardening. When I'm not traveling, you can often find me working in our yard on summer Saturdays. Gardening requires learning and research to understand which plants thrive in specific conditions. Similarly, the lyrics “this world is crazy, spinning out of control…” mirror the chaotic world we live in today, where being a Christian can sometimes feel overwhelming. God's promises may seem distant.

However, the good news is that challenging circumstances can strengthen our faith. Just as taking deep breaths replenishes us, our faith flourishes during tough times. Impossibility is where faith in Jesus grows best—it acts as the foundation for our spiritual growth.

In gardening, I carefully choose plants and decide when to plant them based on the environment. Likewise, God chose you before the world began, planning good works for you. Just as I select plants for my garden, God placed you here for a purpose.

Keep your head up! Let your faith grow in God's goodness, even when times are tough. Trust that God is guiding you. Your life has a meaningful purpose, and you can have confidence in His plan.

he’s way ahead of you lyrics

Verse 1
This world is crazy
Spinning out of control
People do the wildest things
And try to rob you of hope
But there is a Promise
He’ll keep you stable and sane
His Word will give You clarity
And faith to face the day

Pre Chorus 1

There’s a hurt that tries to stop you
And make you bitter if it could
But what was meant to harm you
My God will turn around for good

Chorus 1
I know you didn’t see this coming
I know it's not what you planned
And it’s okay that you don’t
Know what to say or to do
God knows what has happened
And He’s way ahead of you

"I'm Gonna Fly" by Phil King

“I’m Gonna Fly” by Phil King

the story and the study
by phil king

"He made my mouth like a sharpened sword; in the shadow of his hand, he hid me. He made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver." - Isaiah 49:2

I wrote this song while watching Midway (2019), a film depicting the pivotal WWII battle in the Pacific theater. The movie showcases ordinary men who volunteered to fight for freedom, risking their lives for a cause they believed in. These were businessmen, teachers, fathers, and sons who displayed immense courage and sacrifice.

As I watched these men give their all, I was inspired to question my own commitment to God. Would I be willing to sacrifice everything for Jesus and the Gospel as these men did for America? Seeing the pilots sacrifice themselves in battle was a powerful reminder of the cost of victory.

After watching the film, I reflected on my role in the Lord's service. Psalm 110 speaks of the Messiah's army, with people willingly serving in holy garments and renewed strength each day. My song "I'm Gonna Fly" expresses my wholehearted commitment to Jesus. My response is simple: because He gave everything for me, I am ready to surrender everything for Him.

i’m gonna fly lyrics

Verse 1
I can feel the careful hand of Jesus
Been taking His time with me
Been making His bow so steady
I can sense the focus of an Archer
He has placed me on His string
As an arrow that is ready

Chorus 1

I’m gonna fly, I’m gonna fly,
Gonna soar with all my heart
Straight to the mark
I’m gonna fly, for the glory of my God
I’m gonna fly

Verse 2
He’s drawn me from
The darkness of His quiver
I’ve looked forward to this hour
He’s been purposefully waiting
The Archer moves as easy as a river
He pulls me back still further
Now I can see where He is aiming

Bridge
Because far beyond
The enemy lines are souls
That gotta know You’ve pulled me
Back to launch me
This I know, this is my hope
These years of tension
Are surely worth it
Oh, Jesus, I know that
When the time has come
Oh, Jesus, I know that
When the time has come

"On These Lips" by Phil King

“On These Lips” by Phil King

the story and the study

I love basketball—a lot. I played in high school and was pretty good. Many of my friends and teammates continued to play in college and even became professional athletes. While I love sports in general, basketball holds a special place in my heart. God knew what He was doing when He had me born in June, just as the NBA season reaches its climax with playoff finals and championship time! My sister was also born in June a couple of years later, and there's a photo of me holding her in the hospital while watching Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls take on Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1991 NBA Finals!

In high school, we would prep for home games by coming out to a loud and energetic pump-up intro song as we took the court. This often intimidated the opposing team and helped us secure home victories. Similarly, Heaven is the home court for every Christian, where the atmosphere is filled with the high praises of our God and King Jesus.

David demonstrated this home-court advantage by boldly praising the Lord, as he said in Psalm 34:1, "I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips!” When we sing praises like in the song “On These Lips,” we shift the battle to our home floor and challenge the enemy on our terms. Praising God is a powerful weapon when found on our lips. I hope you embrace this as you listen to the song.

~Phil King

On These Lips Lyrics

Verse 1
Every morning mercies rise
Faithful with the dawn
Through every day
And darkest night
This shall be my song
In the valleys up the hills
As seasons come and go
Put confidence in Him alone
Peace be still my soul

Chorus 1

I will bless the Lord
At all times
His praises
Will be found
Right here
On these lips

Verse 2
I will bring my offering
Though sorrows come in waves
Even then let worship rise
I’ll trust Him
Come what may

Bridge
He’ll be with us in the fire
Bread when we are
Weak and hungry
Ever present help
In time of need
He is our Provider
When our labor
Leaves us weary
He’s enough to be
Our rest and strength

A Few Word From
Jordan Merritt

This project means a lot of things to me, but joy is the highlight. This project is the culmination of life lived on mountaintops, valleys, and everything between. The consistent theme throughout is the gift of joy in God’s presence. His joy inspired laughs, stories, and memories throughout the last decade of my family’s life. From the inside out, His joy was like a rope and a river that held us during the darkest, most uncertain times. He is faithful like the morning sunrise. My prayer for you is that you experience the gift of His presence and the joy of knowing Him. My hope is that this album helps you to celebrate. I love you all!
